Among many diverse duties, the major responsibility of the Department of Public Works is the maintenance of all Township roads. Consisting of 9 full-time employees, the Department carries out routine maintenance programs such as snow/ice control and the annual leaf collection programs.
The Department's mechanic is responsible for the maintenance of the 12 police cars, 8 heavy public works trucks, 4 pickups, 8 pieces of heavy machinery and 4 municipal staff vehicles. In a typical year, the Department uses about 750 tons of rock salt and 1,500 tons snow grits, plus 3,500 gallons of calcium chloride for snow and ice control activities. The leaf collection program is one of the Department's major activities, collecting 1500 cubic yards of leaves collected over a span of two months in the fall. Routine road patching consumes about 1200 tons of asphalt in a typical year. The Department will replace 25-50 traffic and street signs annually.
DPW will open for brush drop off beginning Saturday, April 14, from 8-3. Thereafter, DPW will be open the 2nd and 4th Saturdays of the month from 8-3 through Saturday, November 10. Residents who have not disposed of Christmas Trees may bring those to DPW as well. Residents are reminded two free pick-ip loads of brush are allowed each year, with brush tickets being available in the Clerk's office for $10.00 each after that.
Additionally, postcards entitling residents to one free pick-up load of bulky household waste to be taken to the Petticoat Lane transfer station are available by calling the Clerk's Office at 735-8800 x200.
The Department operates from 6:00AM to 2:30PM Mondays through Fridays (these Summer Hours effective May 26th, 2009), plus at other times when necessary due to emergencies such as snowfall. To reach the Department, please call:
